Refreshing hotel refurbishment

The Abode Glasgow (formerly The Arthouse Hotel) is situated in the heart of the city, just moments away from all the local attractions, making it the perfect place to enjoy a short break. This classic Edwardian townhouse offers a total of 59 bedrooms, all of which have been updated as part of a 3-month renovation project. The hotel offers a stylish place to stay, and the newly designed bedrooms all offer a unique combination of modern comforts with a design that reflects the historic values of the building.

The project in a nutshell

59 bedrooms, 12 uniquely designed items and over 400 pieces of furniture;
this is our project in a nutshell.

1

The property Located in a prime spot in the City Centre, The Abode Glasgow enjoys a rich history and is perfectly placed for a unique city break. The building itself is a classic Edwardian townhouse, and reflects the perfect balance of striking traditional architecture with contemporary design. The recent refurbishment of the hotel has created four unique types of room for the guests, all offering their own sense of style and comfort.

2

The brief As Principal Contractor on the project, McMillan was responsible for all decoration, electrical work, plumbing and joinery, along with the manufacture and installation of new case goods and the refurbishment of existing furniture. The building has many Edwardian features and modernising such a unique property, whilst retaining its character, was an exciting challenge.

3

The scope The renovation work extended to all 59 bedrooms. The project was delivered in 5 phases, over 3 months and involved a workforce of up to 20 on-site at any time – all of this happening whilst the hotel continued to operate. The rooms have been categorised as Comfortable, Desirable, Enviable and Fabulous, all requiring unique design and planning, whilst still offering high quality accommodation and modern comforts.

4

Technical design The design was conceived by 10 Design, Glasgow, who created a concept that was a truly modern refresh, and that complimented the traditional feel of the hotel. The McMillan team worked closely with 10 Design, agreeing specifications and producing all working drawings for client review. The differing room types meant unique styles and finishes, and 12 distinct pieces required creation in varying quantities.

5

Manufacture and procurement Working with some of our key suppliers, both locally and internationally, McMillan managed all elements of the supply-chain during the manufacture and procurement stage of the project. It was McMillan’s role to ensure that the highest quality standards were met and all products were delivered to the client’s lead times.

6

Installation and management As Principal Contractor, McMillan had a continuous presence on-site, coordinating each of the 5 phases in collaboration with hotel management; directly managing multiple trades, indirectly managing 3rd parties and ensuring the site was operated in a fully compliant manner to Health and Safety. The Abode Glasgow re-launch was completed to the planned 3-month timescale, just in time for summer.
